The Fruit Company Gift Basket Review

It’s always fun to get snacks delivered right to your door, but that’s especially true when they’re of a caliber that you can feel equally good eating them on your own as you would sharing them with a party of guests. That was my experience with ordering from The Fruit Company, and oh, by the way—don’t even get me started on how delicious those apples were.

I should say, I’m very fussy when it comes to fruit. As in, if the store doesn’t have the single variety of apples I like, I don’t buy apples. But the fruit inside gift sets from The Fruit Company isn’t your average grocery store fruit. This is something that becomes apparent from the moment you open the box and get smacked in the face with the smell of fruit that would make Snow White swoon all over again.

Thankfully, our household doesn’t have any poison-plotting sorceress; otherwise we would have all been in trouble. That all being said, I plan on eating every single piece of fruit in this gift basket, and I think anyone with taste buds would do the same. Here’s my honest review of what it’s like ordering from The Fruit Company and everything you’ll want to know before placing your first order.

About The Fruit Company

The Fruit Company is a 74-year old orchard and gifting company based out of the Hood River Valley in Oregon. They are best known for their amazing selection of hand-picked apples and pears, although they also offer a variety of edible gift sets containing other snacks.

Most gift sets from the company include some combination of fresh fruit, meats and cheese, crackers and popcorn, and gourmet chocolate and sweets. Baskets can be delivered simply or in more elaborate “towers” where individual boxes hold each item and are stacked to create a gift-worthy presentation.

My Fruit Company Experience

I ordered the Winter Wonders Tower ($189), which comes with a variety of sweet and savory treats as well as a large order of fresh apples and pears. My order was arranged into a tower, with fruit boxes at the bottom, followed by boxes of sausage and smoked salmon, cheese and crackers, caramel popcorn and chocolate bars, and chocolate-covered fruits. The boxes themselves were just as lovely as those pictured online, and I plan to save and reuse them for other holiday gifts.

The Online Ordering Experience at The Fruit Company

Ordering online with The Fruit Company is very easy, and once you’ve made a selection you aren’t bombarded with upgrades or extras. Since gift baskets from The Fruit Company are so elaborate, there’s hardly even a need for extras. I appreciated the clean shopping experience in which you can quickly and efficiently choose what kind of gift you’d like to send (fruit only or fruit plus other snacks) and then select a basket based on your budget.

It’s also worth noting that the company offers a variety of shopping categories to help you find what you’re looking for even faster. Some of the most standout of these include the Kosher gifts, Gluten-free baskets, and gifts under $65.

Talking Delivery

The order arrived on time and was securely packaged. Although the tippity-top boxes of the tower had come undone during transit, these only held individually wrapped candies, and therefore the spillage inside wasn’t a huge deal.

Overall, the ‘tower’ was intact and made for a bold first impression. I can imagine this would mean even more as a gift, since the recipient wouldn’t be expecting a tower of fruits and treats. The unboxing process was also fun, as it allows you to appreciate the thoughtful selection of each box individually and adds to the overall joy of receiving this kind of gift.

Although the packaging felt a bit much in some places (especially when it came to the individual wrappers on each piece of fruit), most of the packaging is highly reusable or recyclable, which I appreciated. The freshness of each and every item was also impressive, and no doubt (at least in part) due to the robust nature of the packaging.

The Verdict

As a very fussy fruit eater, I was skeptical about whether or not I would even enjoy the fruits provided by the company. A few days in, and my husband and I have polished off every single apple, and since pears take a bit longer to ripen, we’re about to dive into those.

The thing about the fruit from this company is that you can immediately tell it’s going to be so much better than what you find at the grocery store. The apples have a magical fragrance that’s detectable upon opening the box, and they come in a variety of colors that would make for a beautiful arrangement on your countertop. As it is, the box they arrived in is also pretty nice to look at, and has been where we store and select our apples these past few days.

Although my favorite part of the gift set was the fruit itself, I also enjoyed the variety of snacks. Most items are packaged in such a way that they can easily be put out immediately as an appetizer for your next party, or stored away until an occasion arrives. The chocolate was also delicious, with real caramel or fruit fillings that made them feel gift-worthy. The quality of the food was such that I felt good about sharing it with guests or even tossing it into other holiday gifts as a sweet extra.

Highlights:

Although expensive, I think the value, freshness, and presentation of the basket makes it well worth the money. What I received was identical to the basket pictured on the website, and the quality of the fruit and snacks were such that I would feel good sending it as a gift and very happy to receive another one.

Considerations:

Prices lean on the premium side throughout so I’d consider these gourmet gift baskets a luxury option for the likes of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother’s Day, special birthdays, or care packages.

The packaging was beautiful throughout, but I felt there was some excess in places that could have made the overall gift a little more sustainable.

Suitable Gifting Occasions

These baskets aren’t cheap and probably best saved as gifts to someone special. I can see them being great gifts for someone who’s recovering from a hospital visit, or even for new parents bringing home a baby. Because of the tasty ingredients, these baskets would also be a generally sound gift for any foodie or fruit-lover in your life.

Alternatives

If you’re looking to send an edible gift that also includes flowers, you might also consider shopping with 1800Flowers or, if you’re in the Midwest— Flowers For Dreams. 1800Flowers partners up with Harry & David (among others) to provide a variety of classic bouquet and gift sets, while Flowers For Dreams includes a homemade touch (like locally-made pies) and donates a portion of their proceeds to charity.
