About Mouth
Who They Are and Where They are Based
Mouth is headquartered in Brooklyn’s DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighborhood. It’s the perfect place for a company focused on finding unusual, quirky, and indie offerings and items for foodies, gourmets, and adventurous eaters.
What is Mouth Known For?
In a nutshell, Mouth is known for seeking out small-batch, locally crafted foods, snacks, and spirits from around the U.S. These curated gift baskets bring together unique offerings from every state.
Mouth incorporates a range of unique and unusual offerings from small makers, with offerings you’d be hard-pressed to find at the grocery store. I’d call their style modern, stylish, and convenient for those looking for upmarket gourmet gifts with a twist.
Mouth’s Regions Served and Delivery Options
Mouth offers delivery across the United States. They’ll also ship to military bases and APOs (Army Post Offices) abroad, with one caveat: only non-perishable items can go to this type of address.
Delivery fees vary by delivery speed and type of item ordered, and here’s where the Mouth ordering process does get a bit more complicated. For non-perishable items, options include:
- Standard delivery for $11.99; this option takes one to two business days to prepare and three to five to ship
- Express delivery for $29.99; this option takes one to two business days to prepare and two to three days to ship
- Overnight delivery for $39.99; orders placed before 9 am PST/12 pm EST will ship that day; orders placed after the cut-off time will ship the next business day and be delivered the day after that
- Orders that include perishable items (which must be kept cold) must be shipped by Express or Overnight delivery.
- Orders that include perishables placed after the 9 am PST/12 pm EST cut-off time on Wednesday will not ship out until next Monday, so they don’t sit in a warehouse or mail facility over the weekend.
Delivery times also vary by state. The Mouth website notes that their carrier (FedEx), offers approximate average delivery times of one to seven business days, depending on location. For instance, most of New England, the South, and the Mid-West take one to three business days, while the Southwest and Western states take from four to seven business days.
All this said, if you want an order to arrive by a certain time, you’ll have to do a bit of math and be sure to choose the correct delivery option.
Mouth Collections and Prices
Mouth’s appeal lies in its vast collection of unusual, hard-to-find items, all made in small batches by regional and local artisans and businesses. Looking through all these options is fun but can also be a bit overwhelming at first glance.
Fortunately, the Mouth website offers several ways to narrow your search for that perfect gift collection, including:
- By gifting occasions, such as birthday, holiday, housewarming, thank you, sympathy, wedding, get well, student, “for guys,” wellness, or business
- By recipient preference, such as snack lovers and cocktail lovers
- By category, such as pickles, cocktail mixers, snacks, cookies, cheese, charcuterie, chocolate, jams, nut butters, coffee, tea, oils, sauces, popcorn, and housewares
- By state or by region
- By dietary features such as gluten-free, vegan, kosher, non-dairy, nut-free
- By ethos, such as female-founded, BIPOC founded and purchases that give back.
Of course, you can also search by price. Curated collections start at about $30 for a popcorn trio and range to about $212 for a packed holiday box.
Choose from more than 75 already-curated collections, or create your own collection of items. Individual items range from $4 to $20.
A big positive was the fact there was indeed something for any budget. The possibilities are, in all seriousness, almost endless. Whether you’re craving black truffle cheddar cheese from Vermont or bacon peanut butter cups from California, vanilla pickled cherries from Oregon or drunken cherry tomatoes from Georgia, peppermint dark chocolate quinoa from New Jersey, or Earl Gray ice cream from Utah, you’ll find it here.
Ethics and Values
Mouth allows you to narrow your shopping experience to include items crafted by women-led companies, such as pickled okra from Mountain Girl Pickles, Tea-Honey Lollipops from Roni-Sue Chocolates, or RhubardShrub from Girl Meets Dirt.
You can shop for items produced by BIPOC-led companies, such as Apple Blossom Bitters from Hella Cocktail Company, Mango Cardamon Hot Sauce from Garam Goddess, or Coffee Infused Habanero Hot Sauce from Señor Lechuga.
You can also choose to purchase items from companies that give back to their communities. Since a local business makes every item, it’s easy to feel good about ordering from Mouth.
My Experience Ordering from Mouth
The Gift Basket I Ordered
Mouth offers so many intriguing and unusual products — and there were so many things I wanted to try — that I had a hard time deciding what to order. I ended up choosing the Happy Everything collection, which contains a selection of curated items including:
- Fine & Raw’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter
- Clif Family of Napa Valley’s Organic Dark Chocolate Toffee Crunch
- Umma Bakery’s Vanilla Dream Sugar Cookies
- McCrea’s Candies Single Malt Scotch Caramels
- French Broad Chocolate Malted Milk Chocolate Bar
- Little Belgian’s Speculoos Spice Cookies
- Yes Cocktail Co’s Alpine Tonic
- A Mouth cotton tote bag
The Online Ordering Experience at Mouth
Ordering online at Mouth is relatively simple. The option to “add to cart” is located prominently on each product page, along with upselling options such as “Make it a Birthday Gift” (with candles and marshmallows) and “Make it a Holiday Gift” with eggnog cookies, peppermint bark, and candy canes.
Some items also come in different sizes. You choose the size you want on the item’s main page when adding it to your cart.
Once you’re in your cart, several upsell opportunities pop up in the form of “you may also like these items.” They’re not intrusive, and it doesn’t complicate the ordering process.
You also have the option to check a box indicating that your order is a gift, add personalized messaging, and to upgrade to wooden packaging.
I appreciated the ability to ship different items to different addresses within the same order rather than placing separate orders for each address. I also appreciated that a promo code was displayed across the top of the screen throughout the process, so I didn’t have to spend time searching for a discount.
After entering my address, I was taken to the delivery page. Here, I was presented with several shipping options — standard, express, or overnight — as well as another chance to enter a promo code and another chance to enter a gift message. Because I didn’t have perishable items and didn’t need my package in a hurry, I could choose standard shipping.
Taking Delivery
I expected a wait of one to five business days. I received my package within the promised timeframe, and it was left at my front door.
The packaging was sturdy and attractive. It was easy to tell that the box was from Mouth, as “To You From Mouth” was printed in large letters across the top. The sides of the box were covered with food puns. I thought this was a nice touch that gave the package a personalized, friendly feel.
Unboxing My Gift Basket from Mouth
The first thing I saw when I opened the box was a cover with a “Happy Tasting from Mouth” message. This helped build anticipation to lift the cover and see what was inside.
Under the cover, a cotton tote bag covered the goodies. I had forgotten this was included, so the tote bag was a nice surprise. I’ll definitely use it for groceries and other shopping — that is, if I can get it back from my daughter, who said it was “adorable” and immediately grabbed it.
Under the tote bag, the contents of the box nestled neatly. Everything was packed with (recyclable) paper. Breakables, like the bottle of Alpine spirits, were double-wrapped in bubble wrap to keep them safe.
All the items were packed securely without looking crowded. Nothing was damaged. All the items were fresh, in perfect condition, and looked just like they did on the website when I placed the order.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the items. Everything was top-notch, and felt very special. Without exception, the labeling was beautiful. None of the items were things I’d seen on the shelves of my local grocery stores, which made the whole experience just that much more enjoyable.
Mouth Gift Boxes Review – The Verdict
My Overall Opinion of the Gift Basket I Received
After tasting all of the items, I can confidently say that Mouth offers good value. Everything in the collection was fresh, of excellent quality, and genuinely delicious.
The items were all pristine and looked exactly like what was pictured on the Mouth website. It’s so much fun to try new treats that you simply can’t find everywhere. I loved that these items were all produced in different parts of the country and especially that small businesses produced them.
Mouth carefully seeks out and curates their products, and it shows. I would definitely order from Mouth again.
The PROs of ordering from Mouth
The best part about Mouth is the ability to try so many different foods from across the country. I loved that the items were produced by small, local businesses that reflect the culture and flavors of the region.
If you need to send a gift to anyone who loves food or likes trying new things, Mouth collections are ideal. The items are high quality and delicious. You can tell they’re carefully curated. I also loved that you could pick and choose items to create your own unique gift box.
Mouth’s packaging is secure and sturdy. The box looked great, arrived on time, and protected all the contents.
Mouth’s versatile and extensive selection of high-quality items means it’s a perfect choice for any occasion, from birthdays and holiday parties to get well and congratulations gifts. You could send a Mouth gift collection to anyone — it’s equally appropriate for a loved one or a co-worker.
The CONs of Ordering from Mouth
The only con I found with Mouth lay in the delivery and shipping (and it wasn’t really a big deal). Mouth’s shipping options mean you have to plan ahead a bit if you need a gift to arrive by a certain time. Also, expedited shipping was expensive, so I’d recommend ordering a week or so in advance where possible.
Whilst the quality and value were generally very good, you should expect to pay from $100 for one of their signature gift baskets which aren’t cheap compared to some alternatives out there.
Mouth does have some upselling on their ordering page. But it’s not that distracting, and many of the suggestions were actually quite helpful.
Occasions to Order from Mouth
Mouth has so many gifting options that it’s an excellent choice for any occasion. From birthdays to holidays, weddings to housewarming parties, there’s truly something for anyone. And because the price range is broad and reasonable, there’s something for any budget. You can order from Mouth and feel assured that you will send high-quality items in an attractive package at a good price.
